Dog age calculator
Read chronological age and a clearly labeled illustrative comparison. Informational only, not veterinary advice.
Choose the age basis
Enter completed whole years and additional months, or select a birthday and reference date. Date mode starts with the local date on your device. Label estimated birthdays as estimates. Choose expected adult size, not current puppy weight; Unknown uses a labeled medium assumption.
Copy keeps the age basis and model assumptions together. Fields remain in browser memory without upload or history. Clipboard denial provides selectable text. Contact is a separate deliberate action.
Chronological versus illustrative age
Manual fractional age = years + months/12. Date mode uses completed calendar years/months/days and the fraction of elapsed days between the current and next birthday anniversaries. February 29 clamps to February 28 in non-leap years; month anniversaries clamp missing days to month end.
Under one dog year, no human-year estimate is supplied. From one to two: H = 15 + 9 × (age − 1). After two: H = 24 + slope × (age − 2). These are this site’s illustrative arithmetic choices, not a clinical assessment.
Chosen groups and slopes
Expected adult groups: small under 10 kg, slope 4; medium 10 to under 25 kg, slope 5; large 25 to under 40 kg, slope 6; giant 40 kg or more, slope 7. Unknown uses the medium assumption. Slopes and boundaries are site choices, not an official veterinary chart or individual breed forecast.
A five-year medium example gives 39: 24 + 5 × 3. Same-age alternatives give small 36, large 42 and giant 45. Compare assumptions rather than treating these as diagnoses.
What the number can explain
The expandable table covers whole dog ages 1–16 for the selected size model. Results above 16 are labeled mathematical extrapolation. Software accepts chronological ages 0–30, whole years and months 0–11, with total no greater than 30; valid dates 1900–2200 and reference no earlier than birth.
Invalid active values hide the prior result and chart and disable Copy. One-decimal human-year displays describe arithmetic precision, not biological precision. This tool supplies no lifespan prediction, clinical life-stage determination, diagnosis or care schedule.
Clear records and examples
Organize a documented birthday, preserve an estimated age or inspect how a model changes with its group. Read the puppy calendar-age guide and worked chart examples. The dog’s individual health is outside these fields.
Read the sources with their scope
The UC Davis veterinary overview discusses age comparisons. AAHA’s life-stage guidance explains individual context. Our custom size slopes and interpolation are not official tables from these organizations.
Informational only, not veterinary advice. Consult your veterinarian about individual age, development, health and care. A human-year number should not determine treatment or reassure you about a health concern.
Calculator questions
What does this dog age calculator show?
Chronological age from years/months or calendar dates, plus an illustrative human-year comparison from a visible adult-size model for ages one and above.
Is this an official veterinary chart?
No. The size groups, interpolation and post-two-year slopes are this site’s illustration. The result does not diagnose health, assign a clinical stage or predict lifespan.
Why is no human age shown for puppies?
The tool deliberately omits human-year comparisons under one dog year. It still shows elapsed age. The boundary is a model-display choice, not a clinical developmental rule.
Are birthdays or inputs saved?
No. The fields remain in browser memory without upload, calculation cookies or history. Copy sends a note to your device clipboard.
Which weight should determine the group?
Expected adult size, not a puppy’s current weight. The groups are site assumptions: under 10 kg; 10 to under 25; 25 to under 40; 40 kg or more. Unknown uses a labeled medium assumption.
How does date mode handle February 29?
The birthday anniversary is February 28 in a non-leap year. Month anniversaries clamp missing days to the last day of that month. Preserve another record’s convention if it differs.
Is the human-year number a lifespan prediction?
No. The calculator supplies no remaining-years field, breed prognosis or care schedule. Discuss individual age and care with your veterinarian.
How precise are the numbers?
Manual mode uses months divided by twelve. Date mode uses elapsed days between successive birthday anniversaries for fractional age. The comparison displays one decimal; that precision describes arithmetic, not biology.
